How Are My Pieces Created?
In order to preserve the comfort of you and your equine, no portrait studio is used.
Shooting
All portrait sessions begin in an evenly lit entryway with a flat surface. Barn doors, garages, and even sheds work beautifully to create the ideal lighting for these pieces. I do not use backdrops or studio lighting, as my goal is to prioritize your horse’s comfort while capturing natural movement and expression. Using my knowledge of equine behavior and personality, my assistant and I gently guide your horse into a variety of poses that highlight their best features. We use a range of tools, including treats, sounds, cat toys, mirrors, and more, to encourage engagement and expression. The “naked” look is very popular, so upon request, we use a specialty thin halter that can be easily removed during the editing process. Breed standards, riding disciplines, and client preferences are all taken into account.
Editing
Once the photos are taken, they are imported to my computer, where I carefully cull through every image to select the strongest candidates for editing. Each chosen photo is then brought into Photoshop, where I correct the lighting and color to reveal the true tones of your equine. Your horse is meticulously cut out from the original setting by hand, allowing me to add a black, textured, or white background. Fine details such as small hairs, whiskers, tails, and manes are refined and added by hand, and minor blemishes can be removed upon client request. Once the image is complete, it is saved and uploaded to your private client gallery for viewing and selection. Much time and care is put into each and every photograph to insure the best results.
Printing
After your gallery is complete, you’ll have the opportunity to invest in fine art pieces through my professional print lab. All packages include a $125 print credit that can be applied toward any purchase. The images you fall in love with deserve to be proudly displayed in your home or barn, not hidden away in a camera roll. Because it can be difficult to visualize how different sizes and finishes will look in your space, clients may send me a photo of their home or barn, and I will create a complimentary mock-up. Once your order is placed, your artwork will be shipped directly to your door, ready to display.

Most fine art images can be transformed into a holiday photo. Your choice of wreath and other holiday embellishments can be added to a pre-existing portrait of your choosing.
